Bedridden

From Nursing Career

The person is so ill, or disabled that they stay in bed for the vast majority of their waking and sleeping life.

Within the UK, the term "bedridden" is viewed as politically incorrect. Descriptive terms such as "stays in bed all the time" or "unable to sit out of bed" are more likely to be used.

People who are likely to fall into this category will be people nursed in bed, being treated for pressure sores (and using a pressure mattress), or people who are physically unable to be seated out of bed due to low muscle tone or physical deformity. People who fall into the latter category may be staying in bed unnecessarily, as they do not have an adequate special seating system available to them. These groups of people should be offered the opportunity to be assessed by a seating therapist (usually an occupational therapist or a physiotherapist.
